Tsunami Survivors - Stock Footage
The first wave arrived at Nai Harn Beach, Phuket, about 10:30 am local time. It was about 4 meters high. The second wave arrived about 2.5 minutes later and it was 7 meters. The third and final one was totally devastating and about 11 meters tall. The waves destroyed all beachfront shops, restaurants and other structures at Nai Harn Beach, hurling boats and other floating objects. Survivors ran for the hills and the people in this clip are very lucky to be alive, but at the same time very unlucky to have lost everything they during years and years had worked so hard for. The footage are shot about 11.00, half an hour after the last wave hit. It is shot at a viewpoint in between Nai Harn Beach and the Phrom Thep cape on the southern most part of Phuket, Thailand.

The Tsunami Survivors footage is shot with a 3CCD DV camcorder and is supplied in flattened QuickTime format. It is shot and captured in DV-PAL format dimensions, 720 x 576 pixels, at a frame rate of 25 fps.

PAL versus NTSC
Traditionally, conversion from PAL to NTSC footage has been a costly process. Now software such as After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Vegas and Premiere all have solutions for converting from one format to the other. We convert each frame of PAL to a single image - as if it was shot on film - and then we print it to either 2 or 3 NTSC fields. The result look much like film converted to video.
